There are various causes of dandruff. The common cause for the formation of dandruff is a dry scalp. The anti-dandruff shampoo contains ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione and selenium disulfide that acts upon yeast and reduce its number.Ketoconazole that is commonly called Nizoral is more efficient. Ketoconazole is active against both Candida and M. furfur.Ketoconazole is effective in treating seborrheic dermatitis as well.
Ciclopirox is also widely used as an anti-dandruff agent.
Coal tar and selenium sulfide help the skin cells to shed dead skin from your scalp. Salicylic acid weakens the flakes so that they can be removed easily by washing.

Home remedies for dandruff

Coconut oil – Coconut oil is very effective in the treatment of dandruff. Massage your hair and scalp with coconut oil, leave it for one or two hours and then shampoo usually with your anti-dandruff shampoo or just with any mild shampoo. It will certainly help in controlling dandruff.
Shampoo containing coconut oil is also helpful.


Lemon – Lemon is very useful in controlling dandruff. Massaging with lemon juice into the scalp, leaving it for fifteen to half an hour and then rinsing it with water, can help a great in the reduction of dandruff. If this is regularly done then gradually, dandruff will disappear. The acidity of lemon helps in balancing pH of the scalp, thus controls dandruff.


Apple cider vinegar – Apple cider vinegar is very useful in the treatment of dandruff. Retaining of the pH balance of the scalp is easy with the use of apple cider vinegar, so contribute to reducing the growth of yeast. It naturally cleans hair and helps clean clogged pores and hair follicles. Vinegar helps in killing fungus and bacteria present in the scalp. It also helps in treating dry skin and reducing dandruff not caused by fungus.


Olive oil – Olive oil is a natural moisturizer. Massaging hair with olive oil not only smoothes hair but also up to great extent help in controlling dandruff.Heat olive oil until it is slightly warm. Then massage it into your scalp and then wrap your hair in a hot towel. Leave it for one hour
and then wash your hair. Doing it weekly on a regular basis will eradicate dandruff definitely.


Baking soda – Baking soda is easily available in the kitchen and is very effective in getting rid of dandruff. Baking soda helps remove dead skin cells and absorbs excess oil. It also retains the pH balance of the scalp and reduce the growth of fungi that cause dandruff. First wet your hair.Rub some baking soda into your scalp. Massage for few minutes and then rinse it with plain water. It will be a great relief from dandruff.


Aloe vera –  Aloe vera gel is an excellent remedy for any skin ailment.It works efficiently in case of eradication of dandruff also. Apart from its soothing effect, it also gives relief from itchiness, caused by dandruff. Scoop out the gel from aloe vera plant and massage it into your scalp.Leave it for half an hour. Then wash it with a mild shampoo. You will also get rid of dry and frizzy hair with the application of aloe vera gel onto your hair.


Tea tree oil – Tea tree oil immensely benefits for any skin infection. So for dandruff too, it is very effective. Massage tea tree oil onto your scalp and leave it for few minutes. Let it get soaked. Then rinse it with plain water.


Garlic – Garlic has antimicrobial property, so it actively acts upon bacteria which cause dandruff.  Crush garlic and mix it with honey. Then rub into your scalp.After few minutes rinse it and shampoo your hair.


Henna – Henna is superb for hair care. It not only colour and smoothes hair but also gives relief from hair fall and dandruff. Mix Henna with tea liquor, curd and lemon juice. Set this mixture aside for overnight or approx. 8 hours before you apply it to your scalp and hair. Now, leave it on for about 2 hours and then wash off thoroughly.



Mustard oil – Mustard oil is an excellent option for hair care. Apply warm mustard oil into scalp and massage for 15-20 minutes. Leave for 1-2 hours and then shampoo your hair. It not only helps in reduction of dandruff but also keeps your hair well nourished and reduce hair fall. Regular use of mustard oil also helps in naturally stopping your hair to become grey.


Fenugreek seeds

Grind fenugreek seeds to powder. Mix curd to the mix and make a thick paste. Rub the paste on the scalp. Leave it for half an hour. Then wash your hair. It not only removes dandruff but also make your hair soft and smooth.
